Interview with MC Supplier

For those who don't know, MC Supplier has been working hard for all of his teen and adult life to get his name out there and to bring dance music of all descriptions to the masses.

He made his name on various pirates in the late 90's and his unique style has managed to give him celebrity, in his section of the industry. With a couple of releases under his belt (Don't give a luck and raise it up to name a few), and working with DJ Luck and MC Neat and pretty much every name you can think of in the UKG, DnB industries, he is a force to be reckoned with. Working as a promoter dominates his life at the moment, with multiple events and venues at his disposal, you can find one of his nights going in London every weekend. I managed to catch up with him last week and this is what he said.

1.Where did the name Supplier come from?

There isn't much of story behind it actually. My mates gave me the name when we were kids and were ringing up the radio for shouts. I can't think why but it stuck.

2.Your dad was in a band. Do you think that was part of your inspiration to get involved in a music scene?

100%! I have grown up with music all around me. Some of my earliest memories are of watching my dad drumming in front of thousands of people!

3.How long have you been in the game?

I have been MCing for 12 years now.

4. Who have been your influences in and out of the rave scene, and what was it that gave you the MCing bug??

When I was a kid I used to listen to a radio station called unity 884 and one day they were playing a tape of a live recording of a rave. There was an MC called Paranoyer doing all these rhymes and I was just amazed at the time and used to just walk around school all day trying to do them! That’s kind of what made me wanna MC really. The MC’s that influenced me when I first started I would say were Paranoyer, MC MC and Shabba.

5. Do you remember your first paid booking? Who gave you your first break?

Yeah, over the years I feel I have had a few initial breaks and stepping stones. But the main break I got was from a guy called Joe at a Club called Labyrinth in Dalston. I went there when I was 16 for the first time ever and the MC hadn’t turned up so I asked the DJ for the mic and amazingly he gave it to me! The promoter – Joe, heard me on and asked me to come back next week. So I did and was the resident MC there for the next two years!!!

6. You are one of the only big promoters in London still putting UKG events with all the big names but some say UKG died out a few years ago. Yet your still packing out events week in week out. What keeps people coming back every week?

To be honest the UKG scene is far from what it was but at my parties, the music policy can be different even on one night. It might be a UKG set then house, funky house, old skool, DnB to club classics! I try and make the parties 'a good night out' rather than an event for a certain music genre!

7.What do you do when you’re not MCing?

I am a bit of a workaholic really and my life is MUSIC whatever I might be doing within it. But that aside when i get some time off, I usually like to go somewhere hot for a weeks surfing which has been a passion/hobby of mine since I was a kid! I play squash as well.

8. I remember you climbing on stage when you were 15 at a United Dance rave in Stevenage and keeping the Mic for hours, do you think moments like that helped raise your profile in the early days?

Yeah definitely! I was 15 and paid to get into the rave then sneaked passed security onto the stage and told the mc 'Hey I’m on next' ha ha I was on all the tapes packs that they sold and it gave me massive exposure back in the hardcore and jungle days!

9. You have built quite a following of fans over the years. Why do you think you have been successful over other up and coming MC's?

I think that because I have always stuck with it and not given up and worked hard and it has paid off. MC wise I think people just like it that I am a bit cheeky with it all and that I am massively lively which makes them all have a good night out!

10. You have performed all over the world. Where is the favourite place you have worked?

Yeah I have been lucky enough to travel the globe and mc but I would say I had some great nights at spot club in Ayia Napa but a big highlight for me, would a beach party I MCed at in Falaraki a few years back. I said on the mic ‘wow there is 6000 people all raving on the beach’. Afterwards the promoter told me there were 8000! It was sick!

11. You have worked with all of the big names in the UKG industry. Who is your favourite to work with and why?

I actually prefer to MC with a lot of the lesser known DJ's as they aer way more hungry to try and smash the place like they have something to prove! I really like that!

12. You have released a few tracks. How have these tracks done?

Yeah by releasing tracks it has really raised my profile and obviously by doing all the videos it really blows you!

13. Do you have any projects in the pipeline?

I have a couple of projects looming but it is something I feel I need to push a lot harder with!

14. Your chats are original and entertaining. What inspires you to write your lyrics?

I find it quite hard to find time to sit down and write nowadays but when I do I always trying and make them quite cheeky and border line on whether I can get away with saying that!

15. What advice would you give to any of the up and coming MC's trying to break through into the scene?

WORK HARD, KEEP WITH IT AND ALWAYS LISTEN TO YOURSELF BACK SO U CAN SEE WHERE U R GOING WRONG!

16. Tell us a bit about your events, names locations, capacities?

Pure temptation is my biggest event and I am lucky enough to have it all round the world! Pure Temptation can hold 2000 people at Club Opera in Tottenham.

17. You have worked a lot in the past with Luck and Neat. Do you have any other collaborations coming up?

Yeah we are all good friends and no doubt we will still do more and more together. The Don’t give a luck video is out now!

18. You have loads of events in Kos, Zante etc. What happening this year?

All about Kos, Malia, Falaraki and Zante this year. Maybe even a couple of new places in the pipeline!

19. Mcing or promoting?

MCing!!!!!!! (It’s more fun and a lot less work! LOL)

20. You have even been known to DJ, are you any good?

I’m getting better!!!! Well thanks Supplier for taking the time to answer our questions! Here are a few of his tunes and links to sites he is involved with.
