Paul Van Dyk @ Matter Review

image
The German Trance maestro returns to Matter with his uplifting, euphoric music. Part of a launch party for his new greatest hits album and joined by some other quality DJ's this was going to be a great night. Read on for all the news and our review of the night.

When we first arrived at the club, we were greeted by a large queue, the door staff were friendly and hurried us through. Through the very thorough search process and we were in, and time to have a look around.

Set across three floors covering 32,737 sq ft, matter has a humongous capacity of 2,600. They’ve installed a body kinetic dancefloor which apparently pumps the music to your feet through an array of audio to kinetic transducers embedded into the dancefloor. Apparently it’s an evolution of Fabric’s body sonic dancefloor. As well as making you feel the music, Matter let's you see the music through a 360 degree projection system mapped to the interior architecture, allowing all surfaces to be projected on.

First the ground floor level, which is basically the dance floor, a huge bar and the DJ booth, with a doorway to outside for the smoking area. There is a slightly raised area around the dance floor, which is always a nice place to be on a rammed dancefloor . The second level is essentially a balcony that overlooks the entire main dancefloor and houses another bar running the length of the whole floor. Great views of the main dance space and lighting system, and a great place to escape the crowds downstairs. A bar runs the full length of the floor and with all the bar space available there was never much of a wait for the massively overpriced drinks on offer.

Upstairs again and there is a small dance floor area leading to a walkway that takes you way above the two areas below. A really amazing little spot way above the crowds. It's a really well designed space and is definitely a popular venue to rave, as the place was filled to capacity with a good mix of both boys and girls.

Paul Van Dyk played between 1.30am and 4.30am and drew everybody downstairs on to the main dance floor. I have only ever seen this guy at festivals, so to be witnessing his turntableism, live keyboards and general musical wizardry in a relatively small venue like Matter, was going to be a treat. We were expecting a  totally different vibe to one you would get in a tent with 15,000 other people, or seeing him live at Priviledge in Ibiza. Matter affords a bit more intimacy and being less than 10 feet from where he was playing and surrounded by the crystal clear system and noisy people the atmosphere was still charged. It was the launch night of a best of album titled 'Volume' so we were treated to many classics including 'Crush', 'We are alive' and For an Angel' which literally raised the roof Overall, it was a nice club, great crowd and of course some epic uplifting trancers that saw us through until the early hours. Quality night, quality club and quality music.
